That ol' Leonard requested in his journal that I do the following:
"List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to."
So, I am going to do this. I am afraid that the songs I list are, in some cases, going to be in some way kid-related. Not like "music for children (Raffi, et al)", but songs my kid wants to hear like all of the time, so if you do not like reading people write about their children, you may want to know this ahead of time.
1. Krokus - Our Love As shown in a previous entry, the Human Child is sort of fixated on the clear vinyl 12" promo single of "Our Love" that was given to me by a co-worker. Planning the recent trip to Alabama, and knowing that the kid would be in the car for like 495 hours, I put the "clear record" on the iPod (actually, I put the entire album "The Blitz" on there, but we're focusing on "Our Love" here...) and we listened to it over and over. The lyrics to this song are awesome. There's this one part where Marc Storace says "We both like foolin' around", which got repeated quite a bit down in old Ozark Alabama this weekend.
2. Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass - Spanish Flea I could really tell the same story about this song as above, minus the clear vinyl and the Swiss people. Also, there's nothing in this song about anyone's enjoyment of "foolin' around". You should see the kid dance to this song, though. He totally tears it up. If he's not asking for the Clear Record (or the "Yummy Yummy Song" which would be The Ohio Express' "Yummy Yummy Yummy" or "Rain", which is Slayer's "Raining Blood"... I have a well rounded child...) He's asking for "Panna Fee" Which means "Spanish Flea" but my kid cannot speak English too good. I'll also mention that even though Whipped Cream and Other Delights gets all the press, if you're in the market for a Herb Alpert record, Going Places (or, to be punctuationally correct about it, !!Going Places!!) is, without question, what you want.
3. Enslaved - Havenless I know adjectives implying destruction are totally overused when people are talking or writing about metal songs, but even having admitted that I have no other way to describe this song but "crushing". This is possibly because I am not a very good writer, but possibly also because this song, well, is. This thing makes me think of glaciers and fjords. Neither of which I have ever seen in real life, but you know... You try listening to this and not thinking of that. The part near the end, after the solo, when the main riff comes back in and the chanting vocals come back makes me wish I knew more than like 4 adjectives. It is good.
4. The Smiths - Still Ill The one with the harmonica intro. That junk gets in my head and just stays there. It's all "Whee-uhwheeeee-wha-wha-wunt-wunt-wah-wee-wunt...." You know what I'm talking about.
5. Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory This album (also called "Dawn of Victory" is one of the best metal albums ever. I mean, it may not be "kvlt" or "br00tal" or any of the tough-guy miz-spellengz that metal dudes use to look spooky scary, to admit such a thing, but this song really gets the ol' blood pumping. Also, the solo is just amazing, which is probably what you'd expect from Luca Turilli, but the rhythm guitar beneath that solo is something you should totally concentrate on.
6. Christopher Cross - Ride Like the Wind Fuck you, yes I am serious, and this isn't in some ironic, "soft rock is so bad it is totally awesome" way. The first Christopher Cross record (and yes, it is the one with "Sailing" on it) is really good. Also, the guitar solos on this reocrd are just weird. If you could isolate them from everything else going on they would sound not at all out of place on an L.A. metal album from the late 80's / early 90's. All sorts of scales and finger-tapping going on. Oh, and Michael McDonald's totally singing backup on this...
Jenks "Tex" Carman - Hillbilly Hula I know nothing about this dude except that this song is on an old-timey Western Swing comp I have and it is one of the craziest things I have heard. There's this weird stuttering Hawaiian / country guitar and these nasal, completely unintelligible vocals which I think are in English, but who they hell knows, and I want to listen to it like 45 times in a row.
Okay, now YOU do it... |
